Innowise Group Created AR App for HoloLens

Interest in Virtual and Augmented reality is growing tremendously.
Microsoft has just announced Windows 10 Creators Update focusing on creating and playing in 3D, and partnered with hardware manufacturers on production of more affordable AR/VR headsets running the Windows Holographic platform.

Being among the first explorers of the revolutionary technology, Innowise Group has created a number of augmented and virtual reality applications.

Innowise Group AR/VR Team was set up at the beginning of 2016, and now includes Unity/Unreal Engine developers, web designers, 3D modellers and animators.

The AR application which we’ve completed this month demonstrates the possibilities of Microsoft HoloLens smartglasses as a competitive product in the AR/VR device market.

Auto Dealer Promotional AR App

The idea behind the project was to demonstrate a car moving on a highway.

Solution

The team took a model of car, which features both exterior textures applied and the car interior textures, so that the interior can be seen as the doors open.
The Unity-based application creates the experience of watching a car moving on a highway – the model of a car is placed on a piece of a highway, which is around triple its length. The car wheels are moving and the highway moves continuously.

Interaction with the Model

The whole scene can be moved and rotated around. The car model itself is interactive – the doors, the hood and the trunk may be opened by a tap gesture with a textbox popping out, when a relevant part opens. Tap on the headlight is a switch between day and night.
The application functionality is being further extended at the moment.

Technologies & Tools

Unity 3D, Visual Studio 2015, C#

Why Is It Important to Hire Testers for Your Projects

When we have an ambitions idea to start a new project, the first intention that comes to our mind is – “The project must have its site!” So, you develop the concept, spend days and weeks preparing content for the site and, finally, you decide to get the project started.

Everybody is concerned about how to hire a good developer to make a site. Still, many customers forget about testers. Yes! It is absolutely important, and is the integral part of development. QA specialists are obligatory and essential part of the process.

Specialists say – “You need 1 tester for every 2 programmers. Each programmer should work closely with a single tester, throwing private builds as often as necessary. “

And this is indispensable fact! QA specialists, in fact, have veto power over releasing any software that doesn't meet muster. Just take several minutes to read why it is important to hire a tester for your project.

Here are the most common excuses I've heard for not hiring testers:

Lazy programmers introduce bugs.

I head customers say – «If we hire testers, the developers will write buggy codes.”  Nonsense! If you really think that way, either you have never written a code, or you completely unaware what writing code is. Bugs, by definition, appear because programmers did not notice the bug in their own code. Many times, it just takes a second set of eyes to see a bug. Developers are also people, you know.

My software is on the web. I can fix bugs myself immediately.

Yep, really, it is funny!  Agree, it's true, web distribution lets you distribute bug fixes faster than the old days of packaged software. Still, do not underestimate the cost of fixing a bug, even on a web site, after the project has already frozen. Moreover, remember that it is easy to implement even more bugs when you fix.

However, a worse problem is that if you look around at the process you have in place for rolling out new versions, you will realize that it may be quite an expensive proposition to roll out fixes on the web.

My customers will test the software for me.

No, No, No! If you do not believe me, try to follow the plan:

  • when developers are about halfway done, release the software on the web without any testing;
  • when developers assume they are done, release the software on the web without any testing;
  • repeat 5 or 6 times;
  • call one of those versions the "final version";
  • release .01, .02, .03 versions every time an embarrassing bug is mentioned on c|net.
  • see, what is going to happen. If you aim at losing your reputation – do it! The worst thing about this form of testing is the remarkably bad impression you will make of your company and your project.

Besides, the whole point of letting "your customers" do the testing is that they find the bugs, and you fix them. Unfortunately, no any company on earth, has the manpower to sift through bug reports from 1,000,000 customers and decide what's really important. Out of all those reports, I would bet that almost all of them will be about the same set of 5 or 10 really obvious bugs.

I can't afford testers!

Sorry, but this sounds hilarious! It is cheaper to hire a tester than to hire a developer to do debugging after the project is done. A lot cheaper. You lose time and money.

Cut costs in hiring testers is an outrageous false economy. Think five times before you take the decision to hire the developers for the project without QA specialists.

Good luck and no bugs!

Exclusive Project by Innowise Group: Catalog.tm (Open for Investments)

Our company “Innowise Group” always has something to make boast of! Just some words about one of the projects – catalog.tm.

Our company has suggestion for the interested concerning the mapping part of the project we are involved.

Cartographic part of our portal - http://catalog.tm/Map/.

We are now in the process of creating the most detailed and accurate map of Turkmenistan. The specialists of our company have analyzed the cartographic market of Turkmenistan and came to conclusion that global services (Google Maps, OpenStreetMap, Here Maps, Bing Maps) and local services (Yandex Maps, Navitel) do not correspond to users’ requirements. The main reason is absence of proper official cartographic basis.

The named cartographic services are characterized by the following criteria:

  • Only data about streets and roads net are satisfying.
  • All services show insufficiency of data about buildings (minimum one third of multistoried buildings lack on map).
  • Only 10% of multistoried buildings have information about address (some addresses are indicated incorrectly).
  • There are no more than 1/6 points of interest on the map, many of them are still incorrect.

Reasoning from this fact, we made a decision to create our own cartographic basis, first, on the territory of Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan. Modern technical means, primarily in the sphere of remote sounding and digital mapping allow creating geo-informational products effectively.

This section is constantly updated. In corporate database, we gathered information about multistoried and permanent structures of Ashgabat. We continue gathering address information – this is the most difficult stage of mapping. Many of Ashgabat buildings do not have sign plates with numbers of buildings and in the process of rebuilding many of them have been removed.

Now we are also creating the map of public transport. We are planning to use the technologies of ESRI for publication of fully-functional map of Ashgabat with possibility of address search (geocoding) and routing of public transport. Several state organizations showed interest in further usage of our maps. For the timebeing, we consider our target audience to be citizens of Turkmenistan, tourists and foreign businesspersons.

Please, let us know at nataliakoriagina@gmail.com if this could be of interest to your company. We are open for new proposals and investments.

Can Distributed Team Increase Software Quality? Our Answer Is “Yes”

In software development, quality is of great importance. We are sure that every team has its own strategy to achieve this objective.

Agile software development also helps reach the goal. But what if team members don’t work together in one office and are distributed all over the world? Can they succeed in agile development?

Don’t be surprised, but work in remote or distributed teams can be a real advantage in terms of software quality. In this case many issues that local teams often have are avoided from the start. What is great about distributed teams?

Less Control, More Responsibility

One of the most enjoyable benefits of working in a distributed team is the fact that direct control over team members is impossible. From the perspective of a manager, this may sound problematic.

But as the result, team members feel responsible for their work and exactly know what they have to do. This factor also keeps team motivation high and lets software quality improve.

Top Talents Work Together

Software development in distributed teams offers you a great chance to bring top talents together in one project. You can look for the right people and choose team members because of their talent rather than their place of living.

It is inspiring not to be restricted to certain territory, as the best qualified candidates are not always found right around the corner.

Different Time Zones Can Be Joy, Not Pain

If different time zones are your biggest concern and fear, we dare to say, they can be a real plus.

While in a remote team with different time zones, your conversations are planned and usually don’t last too long. You will have a solid time span to concentrate on actual work without being interrupted by constant questions or spontaneous meetings.

Everyone needs such focused time domains to dive into work. If you are not interrupted too much at this time, it will boost your productivity and obviously result in better speed and quality of development.

And with software engineers from different parts of the world, the team almost never stops working. The coding must go on!

Consider This to Have a Successful Remote Team

If you want your distributed team to work successfully, there are some things to pay attention to.

Team members always need to know where exactly the project is. It can be not so easy when there is no personal communication. Use a messenger that offers a shared channel for all participants, as well as enables direct communication between individual team members.

It can even replace everyday agile meetings. The goal of these meetings is to keep all team members well informed. This also can be achieved online. To assure a good contact between all team members, it may be useful to have regular video calls. Besides, a good source code management system is a must for distributed teams.

Of course, work in distributed teams can be a challenge for many reasons. But if you take up this challenge, soon you will reap the benefit of increased software quality. Be bold, wisely use distributed team advantages, encourage team culture and good luck!

If you have any thoughts or questions, feel free to leave your comments below.

We follow the best practices of web development, and our team is a go-to-team if you need a great website for your business. Check out the description of this project.

CHALLENGE

The objective of the project was to develop a website for a 2015/16 Premier League campaign of a professional football club. The website should engage football club fans and sports fans in general through a gaming section integrated with football statistics and a special section about the most famous and astonishing gaming moments in the history of the club (goals, assists, etc.).

In the section about famous moments there should be a voting mechanism for users to choose their favourite gaming moments.

The website should also strengthen the brand message of a logistics company which is an official partner of the football club. So, the gaming section for fans should be branded with the logo of the logistics company.

The Customer provided the following requirements:

• The website includes three main sections: gaming section, section about famous gaming moments, and a social feed;
• The website has a responsive design and adapts to mobile devices;
• WordPress CMS integration;
• Integration of the 3rd party football statistics service Squawka;
• Google Analytics integration.

SOLUTION

The Innowise Group Team implemented such functionality and features as:

1. Match countdown timer with CMS driven match title and a counter which provide the admin with the possibility to input the title and the starting date/time of the next match. The countdown timer counts down days, hours, and minutes left before the next match.

2. Gaming section with a “Play now” widget for a game, introductory text, and four content types (preview, review, statistics, and prizes):

  • Preview and review sections are separate WordPress pages. On desktop and tablet, by clicking on “Read full preview/review” the content of this pages is shown as an overlay page on the right side of the homepage. On mobile, a separate page with a header and footer is displayed;
  • Statistics content is an image gallery in a form of a slider. By clicking on thumb image, its larger version appears as an overlay on the homepage;
  • Prizes content is a separate WordPress page. On the homepage there is an introduction panel with a video widget. The video can be enlarged as an overlay on the homepage. By clicking on the “Tell me more” button an overlay page with prizes content will appear on the right side of the homepage. On mobile, this opens a separate page with a header and footer.

3. Section about the most famous gaming moments that includes up to 6 subcategories (for goals, passes, assists, etc.) and has voting functionality. Each subcategory has 4 states: “preview”, “voting”, “winner”, and “review”.

Subcategories can have two types of content: a gallery with images and video or a voting panel. Admin can add two options for users to vote for any of the options in each of 6 subcategories. User is allowed to vote only once. The plugin which allows one vote per IP address is used to achieve this.

4. Social media panel that consists of several Twitter feeds and has up to 3 columns depending on the screen width. It scales down to one column on mobile devices.

Software for creation of mobile applications for automotive dealers

We now live in the mobile first era. It does not really matter what you sell, the first thing you must think of – how deep you can go mobile. Let us imagine a business person who bought a good car from a respected dealer and expects a decent level of post sale service for his money. The worst thing the dealer can think of is hoping their customer will be surprisingly eager to write down a dozen of phone numbers and make indiscriminate calls in case he or she needs something. This is not how things are done in this day and age.

CHALLENGE

You can’t expect a customer of an automotive dealer to have no smartphone, can you? IPhone it may be or one of so many Android devices, this is an essential instrument for people of basically any walk of life. This is where any dealer must have a place; you can’t get any closer to a customer even if you arrange your office next door to him.

Automotive dealerships are no theme parks, so there’s little surprise that services they provide are pretty much the same. They may vary in price, customer experience, working hours and sometimes quality, but the scope is very similar, after all. There is a number of pretty basic services which everyone can offer to a customer: buy a new car or maybe ask for a test drive first, take out insurance or have the car inspected. Give or take, there’s about a dozen of options that a dealer may want to include into a dedicated mobile application for their customers.

SOLUTION

This is where Innowise Group steps in. Our customer, a leading provider of enterprise software solutions and services for the global automotive retail and wholesale market, had a great idea to create a software product for creation of such applications. This meant that Innowise had to make a user-friendly environment which would give a possibility to build applications quickly and at a low cost.
First, we needed some kind of working environment so that the user could see the whole picture. This is why implementation of the configuration manager was our first step towards the goal.
The configuration manager is an ASP.NET MVC 5 based system used for creation and management of the application templates. It is used for:
  • - monitoring and control of a particular application status,
  • - customization of modules available in the application constructor,
  • - configuration of application using the application constructor.
The configuration manager employs the MS SQL dealership database to create a very own MongoDB configuration database. Common parameters are synchronized between these two databases.
The system administrator can monitor the current status of any given application including version, upload date and responsible manager. He can also add users eligible to work within the environment with the possibility to reduce their permissions to customize modules.

After the manager had been built, the work went on to the application constructor itself.

Application constuctor

First, core elements of a basic application template were determined: News, Services, Dealers, Assistance and Profile. These are the elements that can be customized at a later stage according to the particular customer needs, stretching from basic appearance options to services provided or any other relevant information. Inclusion of most elements is regulated by a number of checkboxes organized in an intuitive menu. Any change is immediately shown in a WYSIWIG preview window so that the content could be checked before saving it.

Every such template is stored in the configuration manager. Once the template is configured and saved, the application builders can use a resulting JSON file featuring all the parameters used in the application to finish the application and upload the product to the appropriate online store – iOS and Android versions available.

RESULTS

Innowise Group created a great tool which helped the customer to drastically decrease the time for creation of applications for automotive dealers. Innowise Group is still supporting the project fixing minor drawbacks and implementing some changes to improve the user experience.

The customers on Google Play and iTunes are rather happy to rate the applications with four or five stars, so here at Innowise Group we know we’ve done our job well, and the end customer appreciates it even without being aware of what’s behind the application he or she likes.

TECHNOLOGIES & TOOLS

ASP MVC 5, MS SQL, MongoDB, AngularJS, jQuery.

Mobile Development: Windows 8 RT Application

Looking for a high quality mobile development? Our professional and customer-oriented team is ready to help you with your project. Below, you can find out more about our recent work.

CHALLENGE

The main challenge was to develop a Windows 8 RT application for tablets for operators of refueling stations. It was specified that the application would include three modules:

1. Customer polls and surveys

2. News and information on products

The News module provides information on products (shop) and promotional events. It also contains images and documents in various formats. This module should have advertising functionality.

3. Repair data arranged as the system of tickets

Tickets are used as requests for maintenance and repair work provided by stations. Each ticket has a status: “worker assigned”, “work finished/not finished”, etc. All the functions have to be available offline as well.

SOLUTION

The Innowise Group .Net team implemented the following tasks:

• Tickets functionality with the possibility to attach images to tickets (creating a ticket, changing the status, history, etc.).

• Advertising functionality (was added to the existing shop module) with 2 options for promoting advertisement in the application: when the application is run, and also advertisement is displayed in the news module as one of its news categories. A counter of advertisement views (sent to the server);

• Integration with backend;

• Synchronization. At the request of the Customer, tickets can be submitted or rejected only when connection with the server exists. When there is no online connection, a ticket draft is saved locally on the tablet. Creating repair documentation, ticket financial statements and attachments (pictures of damages) is available offline, and the data will be sent to the server during the next active connection. Each time the application is run, the server DB updates are checked.

• Adding more features to the project;

• Stabilizing, etc.

The application is written in C# and XAML programming languages. It exchanges data with the server in XML and multipart/form-data formats using http protocol. For local data storage, SQLite database management system is used. JSON format is used for maintenance of operating state.

RESULT

The team has successfully completed development and testing of the application. It runs smoothly and provides high quality service for users.

Automated testing of mobile applications with Robotium Solo

One of the most popular tool for automated testing of mobile applications under OS Android is Robotium Solo.

To create automated test scripts using Robotium Solo, first the following libraries and tools need to be downloaded and installed:
- Eclipse – integrated development environment for creating the test project;
- ADT (Android Development Tools);
- SDK (Software Development Kit);
- JDK (Java Development Kit);
- robotium-solo-x.x.jar – library for work with Robotium Solo (link);
- re-sign.jar (link).

The next step is customizing the system:
  • create the system environment variable ANDROID_HOME, indicating the path to sdk (e.g., d:\adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-version\sdk);
  • create the user environment variable JAVA_HOME, indicating the path to jdk (e.g., c:\Progra~1\Java\jdk1.7.version);
  • add paths to the following folders to the PATH variable: \sdk\tools, \sdk\tools\lib, \Java\jdk1.7.0_25\bin, \sdk\platform-tools, and also the following values: %ANDROID_HOME%/tools; %ANDROID_HOME%/platform-tools.

Getting started:
1) run SDK Manager.exe file, create a new virtual mobile device and run it; check that the device has really started (run command adb devices in the console); if the device isn’t displayed in the list or there is a caption offline, you can try to restart the device;
2) change sign of the application, for which you are going to create automated tests, with the help of the prior downloaded library re-sign.jar;
3) install the application (run the following command in the console: adb install path_to.apk);
4) create the project in Eclipse (you should select the same Android version as the device runs);
5) create a new class in the project;
6) add the library robotium-solo-x.x.jar  to the project;
7) change the manifest file AndroidManifest.xml: package = "name of the package where class for testing is located", android:targetPackage = "application package name” (it is displayed in re-sign.jar);
8) in Target tab in Run Configurations specify the device to run test;
9) type the testing class code (the example can be found
here), then run as Android JUnit Test and analyze the results.

Our QA team has great experience in automated testing of mobile applications performed on both real devices and emulators.
